THE GIRL WITH THE NEEDLE premiered in Danish cinemas on January 23, 2025, where it was also announced as a nominee in the Best International Feature Film category for the 97th Academy Awards. The film stars Vic Carmen Sonne and Trine Dyrholm in the leading roles. It is directed by Polish-Swedish talent Magnus von Horn, and had its world premiere at The Cannes Film Festival 2024, where it was selected for the main competition and received phenomenal acclaim from critics.
Plot
Young factory worker Karoline struggles to survive in Copenhagen in the aftermath of World War I. When she becomes unemployed, abandoned, and pregnant, she meets Dagmar, a charismatic woman running an underground adoption agency that helps mothers find foster families for their unwanted children. With nowhere else to go, Karoline takes on the role of a wet nurse, and a strong bond develops between the two women. However, Karoline’s world is shattered when she uncovers a shocking truth...

THE GIRL WITH THE NEEDLE is directed by Polish-Swedish talent Magnus von Horn, whose feature debut, THE HERE AFTER, premiered at the Directors' Fortnight in Cannes in 2015 and won prestigious Guldbagge Awards in Sweden for Best Film and Best Director. His second feature, SWEAT, was part of the official Cannes program in 2020.
The screenplay is written by Magnus von Horn and Line Langebek, and the film is produced by Malene Blenkov for Nordisk Film Production and Mariusz Włodarski, with support from the Danish Film Institute, DR, the Swedish Film Institute, the Polish Film Institute, Nordisk Film & TV Fund, and Eurimages.
